So Rudy Fernandez and Patty Mills have been spending a lot of time together lately. And it ain’t because they sit next to each other on the Portland bench. No. From all accounts, this is a full blown ‘bromance‘. As HoopsVibes writes:
Word is controversial Portland Trail Blazer Rudy Fernandez is now happy in Rip City, in large part, because of his friendship with reserve guard Patrick Mills.
These two hang at home in Portland. These two hang on the road. These two are tight.
In fact, the Fernandez-Mills ‘Bromance’ is apparently the main reason the Spanish swing has rescinded his trade demand and settled in Portland.
And don’t they make a cute couple!

Very clever Robd, ” bromance”
Why does patty always have a towel around his neck when he’s on the bench? It’s not like he plays enough mins to break a sweat… or at all…..
how good is the South Park Guitar Hero episode
bob Patty is averaging almost 15 mins a game on the season and close to 20 mins a game over the last 10.
I just checked the stats and you’re right! He also went 3-14 from the arc over the last 5, I guess you do break a sweat when you’re throwing bricks.
Bob, Patty has been patient and worked his arse off to get the opportunity he’s received recently.
Not once has he run to the media bitching about how he’s God’s gift to the game and complaining about lack of minutes.
He’s the prototypical humble athlete with talent to burn and he’s finally getting another chance to show that talent since the Olympics.
To say he’s “throwing bricks” is just ignorant dude.
The NBA is a highly competitive league with plenty of players in and out of favour before they know it. Not everyone gets a 15yr career.
Patty has the coach’s trust, and once his shot starts falling, Andre Miller will be glued to realestate.com.
@Coach Bob’s being inflamitory sure, but he’s also somewhat right – 3/14 is terrible. Patty’s selling point is that he can space the floor which helps open the paint up for Aldridge who’s having a career year in Roy’s absence. So when he’s shooting 3s at a low clip his value on the court is greatly diminished considering his size. He may be the backup for the moment but his minutes went down to 15 and 12 the last 2 games. I love Patty as much as the next guy but make no mistake, if Miller gets traded, it won’t be for Patty to be the starting PG.
Five games is a very small sample size, and Patty’s slightly decreased minutes at the moment isn’t because he’s playing particularly bad, it’s just that Miller is playing better. Nate gives the minutes to whoever is hotter on a game by game basis.
Ben, let me start by saying that I hear you. I’m doing my best to view Patty’s journey with un-biased eyes.
But the fact remains, he’s waited a long time for this and must be afforded some nerves if nothing else.
I’m currently working my way through these games to get a better understanding, (and so as not to be a complete armchair critic!) of what’s happening.
I’ve seen some vision and Patty is generally open when he takes his shots, so they have to start falling. Agreed.
My point is that it’s silly to sledge him as a “brick layer” because he’s had a shaky start to actually getting minutes!
Rudy was playing like “Weekend at Rudy’s” earlier in the year but has found some form. No one expects Patty to drop 20ppg.
If Patty can average 12ppg, 6apg and 2 spg over the next month or so, (regardless of his FG% as long as he’s not forcing shots) there’s nothing to say the Blazers won’t trade Miller and give Mills the reigns. Especially when they are “injury forced-rebuilding” as such ala the Spurs before they got Duncan.
Mills deserves praise for not being an douchebag.. that’s sorta what I was saying.
ps. I love this banter. Long live the non-locked out NBA.
The guy is a man among men, no question, the way he handles himself, the resilience he’s shown throughout his career so far, top bloke. While I’m expecting him to top his 14 points at some stage this season, even have a 20 point game maybe, averaging 12pts 6ast is a stretch, partly because of the minutes, but particularly for assists – because almost all his passes are either coming up and setting up the set, fast passes up the court in transition, feeding the post. Often his only playmaking passes are in pick’n'pops where the shots are deeper lower % jump shots, or a pass to a curling Rudy (who actually has kinda been a brick layer!) – it’s hard to rack up assists with his current role and skill set. What he can do is up the tempo of your second unit, score in bunches with limited minutes, and maybe get some dudes open shots – perfect for a role-playing backup PG. His job this season is to be consistent and secure himself that role, as well as market himself as that guy to the rest of the league.
Accepted and agreed. Good point.
