Coach Pop gives Hack-a-Shaq the thumbs up

I’m sure you all know about the off-season hostility between Shaq and Coach Popovich, after Shaq called him out for bringing the game into shame by resorting to the Hack-a-Shaq tactics. The obvious response there is “Hey Shaq learn to shoot free throws!”. But I think Coach Pop’s response today was even better.

The Spurs went to the Hack-a-Shaq five seconds into the game, a move that even shocked the TV commentators. I love it how their first response is so serious: “… and… it looks like they immediately have a Hack-a-Shaq call… I don’t believe it, 5 seconds in!” But of course it was all a rouse. Nice to see that Popovich has a sense of humour, a true golden moment.

Patty Mills Draft Watch

UPDATE 26/6: Patty goes #55 in the draft, a little later than everyone expected. But a great day for Australian basketball nonetheless. We sat down with the draft dude for a post-draft Q&A.

UPDATE 25/6: Latest ESPN Mock draft has Patty going #31 to the Kings, (who will already have a PG from their first round, probably Tyreke Evans).

UPDATE 21/6: John Hollinger pulls some numerical mumbo-jumbo and places Patty Mills under the 'Potential Disappointments' category of his Draft Rating system. Hope you read that Patty and go on to shove it right up Hollinger.

UPDATE 18/6: Chad Ford puts Patty into his "Tier 5" category of draft prospects. "This is what I would call the first-round bubble group and where the consensus really started to break down. A number of teams had Budinger in Tier 4, but not quite enough for him to make the cut. Carroll, Gibson and Pendergraph were borderline picks here. Every one of these players dropped out of the top 30 on at least one NBA team's draft board." Also, the Atlanta Hawks take a look at Patty. Could they take him with their #19 pick?

UPDATE 17/6: Patty impressed at his workout for the Hornets. Could they take him with their first round #21 pick? Follow the link for a video of Patty's workout.

UPDATE 16/6: Mills to definitely stay in draft, his St. Mary's coach wishes him well.

UPDATE 9/6: Patty and Joe Ingles had much better showings on Day 2 of Eurocamp. Patty scoring 30 to go with 5 steals, 4 rebounds and 3 assists, while Joe stepped up with 16 points, 4 steals and 3 assists.

UPDATE 8/6: Patty stock seems to be almost at a standstill - and if anything going backwards. It's not that he's not impressing, it's more that he isn't showing many new things. The Eurocamp in Treviso has just started to showcase International talent and two Aussie's Joe Ingles and Patty Mills attended. As aforementioned, Patty was his usual self, more of a scorer than a facilitator with a stat-line of 16 points (6-13 FG) and only 1 assist. Joe Ingles I'm told had a horrible day, matter-a-fact doing some research he had 1 point and 3 turnovers in 30 minutes. That is not attractive at all. My best guess is Mills is still somewhere between 20 and 40. I can't see him going much further than the early second round. Ingles on the other hand is probably 50-60 as most teams selecting in that range take International players so they don't have to take on their contracts but at the same time not waste the pick. -- Jobba

UPDATE 4/6: Mills Is nowhere to be found in Chad Ford's latest mock draft. Looks like Patty's stock has dropped a little after the Draft Combine, placing him in the second round. However, according to his workout rates, he's the quickest guy in the 3/4 court sprints at 3.1 seconds, tied with Darren Collison, and Jodie Meeks.

UPDATE 3/6: Seems like LeBron is leading the push for Patty Mills in Cleveland next year.

UPDATE 2/6: Mills has committed to the 2009 NBA draft and will be soon hiring an agent. On Day 1 of workouts Patty impressed scouts with his speed, and has been ranked 10th amongst point guards in this year's draft.

Currently draftexpress.com have him at pick #29 which goes to the Lakers while nbadraft.net has him at #20 going to Utah.
